I am currently a crop manager on a dairy in north east PA. I am seriously looking into starting a custom harvesting business and am looking for any advice on how to get started from scratch. I previously worked for a large company doing custom spraying so I have some experience in the custom business. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please contact me at jjd244@hotmail.com.

Do you speak from experience Kent? How's harvest going for you? Looks like we'll get back to the trucks & combines tomorrow - it's been a week since we did anything! If you can't tell, Brad, we've been up against wet weather in the central states. I think the upper states have seen their fair share of snow and we get an inch of rain, or more, about every other week. It's SLOW going for us. The yields are all over the board. Some of the corn and beans that were planted late in our area (Eastern NE) - due to a wet spring - haven't done as well as the crops that were planted when they should have been. If all goes well.......we MIGHT be done in a couple of weeks :).

Just a SAFETY reminder to those of you still harvesting in the SNOW, MUD, &WATER. Make sure your crew members know how to hookup and pull the equipment to drier muddy ground without causing injury to themselves and damage to equipment.
Thank You and BE SAFE

Just wanted to let all who have posted looking for a job on this discussion board know your employment requests for the 2009 harvest season haven't fallen on deaf ears. I am currently putting together a listing of all previous entries. This will be made available to members attending the convention in March. Since I've mentioned the convention, I'll add a plug to all members to make plans, mark your calendars and attend the 2009 convention in Topeka, KS. For more information, you can call Pam at the office - 620/664-6297. There's already a tentative agenda listed on the home page of this website and more information listed under the link "USCHI Events". Check out last years pictures to see what it's all about!
