Gosh, Roger, I was really anxious to view the movies but I can't open them up. This was the same time my grandpa got involved with harvest so I was excited about see "The Good Ole' Days"! You may remember him - Elvin Hancock - from Grand Island. Maybe I'll try with a different connection and it will work this time.

To all harvesters, I'm headed for the 5th annual Wheat Technology Meeting in O K City, I will inquire about a variety of wheat that when you pull into the field the wheat will drop out of the head and march 2 by 2 to your truck and load itself upon a certain command.

Headed North today. It'll probably take a couple of days - then turn around and come back for the rest of the equipment.

Well.......it didn't take nearly as long as it could have to finish those last 20 acres. Jim and I went to the field late yesterday afternoon and cut the remaining acres. The farmer gave the ok to cut regardless of the moisture as the elevator said, "bring it in". So - now the major clean up before heading north to MT. I notice the guys who are leaving their work information on here......maybe a suggestion to you. There's a section of this website that have harvesters that have paid to advertise the need for employees under the "employment section'. If I were you, I'd make sure and send all your information to those harvesters, as well as on this general blog. Harvesters are ALWAYS looking for experienced help.

Hey Ross! Good to hear from you! The first night, we spent right inside the Rocky National Forest - Moraine Park. The second night, we intended on staying at Blue River Campground but it was closed due to the Pine Beetle. So, we went to the Mizpah Campground just north of Empire. I liked the second night better - less people and more on the primitive side. Seems the Pine Beetle is having a hayday with the trees in CO. It's so sad to see all the dead trees. The campgrounds are closing because of liability reasons. We got 1/2 inch of rain last night - just short of finishing here by 2 hours. Supposed to rain again tonight - 2 hours may take 4 days :) In a way, it's ok cuz I really don't like the clean up process. I've heard some guys are up against green wheat. Hope everyone's enjoying the break!

Been awhile since I've checked in. I hope everything is going good.
I did a report on the Nebraska Harvest. It has been interesting, even though all harvest years are. Sounds like good quality through out. Yes there are fields damaged by hail, high winds, and of course lack of rain. Hastings is basically done, with some 63 test weight, Columbus is nearing completion, with some 50 bu fields. But report out of Lyman's Crossroad Elevator, that the old stand by variety's were doing well. But a farmer produced 66 tw. I have mentioned that there is no use to the others who are going to the state fair to even take fair sample because it sounds like he has the blue ribbon wrapped up. What's the variety you ask? For $5 I will tell. You can make checks payable to the Ross Fund to get a New Pick Up.
Hey TZ where did you camp. I have been a life time Colorado camper. You could have went to Mt. Sunflower, south of Goodland, Ks. I hear the view there is wide open.

Hey Jon - this is for you :)
Not much to report on. We had a shower tonight - just enough to stop the combine and come to the trailer house early. Jamie came to Limon for a visit over the weekend so we packed up our camping equipment and went to the mountains for a couple of days. We "camp" in our trailer house all summer long so "real" camping to us is the tent. Everyone pitches in and we have a great time. I wonder if this means we won't get to go in MT now, though?? The wheat here is averaging 25/30 but the test weight is 61+. It's beautiful wheat - just not very much of it. It's better than 5 bu. rye that we were cutting, though! However, aren't we just out there to cut acres anyways :) If the rain holds off, we should finish here tomorrow and then it'll be time to head for MT. Hope everyone's doing really well by now and not feeling too tired. Breaks are always a great way to get recharged......however, it makes you feel like harvest is going on without you!

We thought we were finished this p.m. however, found out we have 60 more acres to finish before we can start the big clean up and move. It rained again tonight. When it rains in the desert, the water runs and runs. The streets of Hobbs, NM were like one big lake. I guess they don't have the street drains like we do up north. I DREAD cleaning up. It will probably be the hottest day(s) of the week - always is. The girls think this will be the worst 4th of July ever - it's usually then when it turns out not to be so bad afterall. It's just different - not what they're used to. Jim's dad fought during WWII so this holiday always has a little more meaning to our family. My brother is in Afghanistan right now. I'll certainly be thinking of him, as well. Happy 4th of July to all the fellow "wheaties" and other harvesters out there!!

OUTSTANDING!! Carlsbad Caverns is a must see by all! It is truly the Grand Canyon of all caves. It was a 3 hour walk but well worth it. Even the girls said they'd go back again. We also stopped by the "Sitting Bull Falls" and experienced a true oasis in the desert. BEAUTIFUL!! The girls insisted on getting in the water - only 55 degrees. I didn't even have the desire but had fun watching them. It was nice having the day off and seeing some new country. This is one of the best benefits of travelling the country and seeing new things! Today, we had another day off. It was actually cool and cloudy here today. Back at it tomorrow, though. We're hoping to get things wrapped up here within few days and start the move north with the rest of the cutters. I feel like we've been left behind :)
